SAYEH-ROSHAN

Release Date: November 21, 2025
Double Bassist Ali Kian Yazdanfar, together with pianist Brigitte Poulin, presents Sayeh Roshan (Persians for "chiaroscuro"). The album portrays the interaction of light and shadow, and the complexity of modern life in the grey zone. This intricateness is often palpable for those with ties to multiple cultures as well. Sayeh-Roshan's contemporary compositions compel composers and performers to consider what their identity - in this case, their Persian identity - means to them now, living in the West, and how a chiaroscuro-like interaction between the West and the East has become part of them.

Release Date: July 7, 2025
Ali Kian Yazdanfar's single His Gabbah is Turquoise marks the world premiere of a new work by Parisa Sabet, commissioned for his forthcoming album Sayeh Roshan. Inspired by the rich textures and colours of traditional Persian gabbah rugs, the piece reflects on memory, heritage, and paternal bonds. Sabet describes it as "an homage to the fathers," interweaving personal narrative and cultural symbolism in shades of turquoise—long associated with wisdom, protection, and hope.

IRIDESCENCE

Release Date: June 23, 2023
Iridescence is the variability in the colour of an object with a change in viewing angle, an optical quality that imparts a magical shimmering to the surface of a soap bubble and fills the feathers of a peacock and the wings of a butterfly with brilliant hues. The works for viola and double bass in Iridescence permit us to see and hear from a different vantage point: two string instruments, often in the shadows of the violin and cello, yet filled with prismatic possibility and potential.

ESCENAS DEL SUR

Release Date: June 16, 2023
A single from Ali Kian Yazdanfar’s album Iridescence, Escenas del Sur is a composition by Venezuelan-born composer Efraín Oscher. Written for double bass and viola, the work pays tribute to those who endured exile, solitude, and loss under South American dictatorships of the late 20th century. Blending expressive lyricism with the rhythmic vitality of Latin American traditions, it stands as both a remembrance and a celebration of resilience.
